ON THE COVER

Red & Blue on Yellow
acrylic on paper, 8” x 8”
by Billie Bourgeois

Things with three wheels have captured the imagination of Baton Rouge artist Billie Bourgeois since she found a rusty trike for $4 in a thrift store a few years ago. Her “Thrift Store Tricycle” series depicts the adored symbol of childhood’s first freedom from a variety of viewpoints. “It was so much fun to draw,” says Bourgeois. “Its angles … the swoop of the frame. Every time I would turn the handlebar it would create new negative speaces.” With the approach of Christmas morning engendering wild anticipation in little people everywhere, her tribute to a trike seems to stir happy memories in folks of all ages. Do you remember your first trike? Billie does. We do, too.
